Digital Product Managers - Specialist or Utility?

Published on 1 September 2023 at 18:38

The diversity of skillset required by a Product Manager is not to be underestimated. Depending where you are in the product evolution, your focus might be about Customer, Business or Technology, and at all times Leadership. If you're developing or servicing multiple products, your focus probably involves all of those at the same time.

The product lifecycle starts with a clear understanding of customer need and market analysis, progresses through strategy, financial analysis, selling your concept, product development, marketing, presales, selling again to external markets, followed by product support. That cycle repeats through product evolution.

The job advertisement for a product manager might just over-simplify this. Employers typically seek specialists, not generalists, and certainly not a "jack of all trades". You might just be able to get away with describing yourself as multi-faceted.

If you're a Product Manager, you're a Swiss Army Knife.

You've got great balance. You're rare!

Be sure to tag a product manager if you know one. They might need this.
